Chapter 13
Lynn
It was rare for me to have a full day off but today was that day, and I planned on sleeping in until at least eleven. Sophie was supposed to come over by noon, and I wanted plenty of time to get ready. But itâs barely ten a.m. when I hear a baby crying and a knock on my front door. Who the hell is here? And where is the baby crying coming from? As far as I know, no one in my apartment complex has any children. Not that Iâm against kids, theyâre great. I just donât want any in my apartment at ten a.m. But I throw on my robe, go to the front door, and look through my peep hole. Standing in the doorway is my boss and friend, Reagan, holding her baby, Emmett. I open the door and look at her, confusion swelling inside of me.
âBathroom! I SO have to pee!â she exclaims, running into my house.
âThat way!â I point, and she nods. She stops to hand me the baby, and he looks at me with the same confused expression I must have on.
âWhat is going on?â I hold him out like heâs stinky because, being realistic, this might be the first time Iâve ever held a baby. I have no clue what the hell I am doing, and I donât want to drop him. I walk into the living room and sit down, waiting for Reagan to be done so she can explain what sheâs doing here.
âHey! Thank you.â She scoops up baby Emmett and gives him a little kiss on his head and then sits across from me.
âDid you stop by just to use my bathroom? Because youâre welcome any time, but I was sleeping.â
âI know, I tried calling but you didnât answer.â She frowns.
âSo you decided to risk it and wake me up instead?â My eyes widen.
âWell, yes. But also, thereâs a delicate conversation that I need to have with you but youâre always working, and I didnât want to have this conversation at the shop.â
âAre you firing me? Because I think thatâs illegal to do that in someoneâs house,â I point out.
âWhat? No! Shush.â She waves me off with her tattooed hand. She has more tattoos than I do at this point, although itâs been a good year since sheâs gotten any new ones.
âThen what?â I prompt.
âIâm looking to take back some time at the shop so I can be there for my kids more. With that, Iâd like to ask if youâd like to take on some more hours and responsibilities.â
âOh,â I say because I donât know what to say. Do I want to work more and take on more at the shop? Iâm pretty satisfied with what Iâm doing already. Do I want to make my job more complicated than it already is?
âIâm looking to make you a partner of Rainy Day Tattoos. Youâre talented and smart, and I trust you. It would require you to be the manager when Iâm not around, but other than that, itâs your normal responsibilities.
