Chapter 13

Lynn

It was rare for me to have a full day off but today was that day, and I planned on sleeping in until at least eleven. Sophie was supposed to come over by noon, and I wanted plenty of time to get ready. But it’s barely ten a.m. when I hear a baby crying and a knock on my front door. Who the hell is here? And where is the baby crying coming from? As far as I know, no one in my apartment complex has any children. Not that I’m against kids, they’re great. I just don’t want any in my apartment at ten a.m. But I throw on my robe, go to the front door, and look through my peep hole. Standing in the doorway is my boss and friend, Reagan, holding her baby, Emmett. I open the door and look at her, confusion swelling inside of me.

“Bathroom! I SO have to pee!” she exclaims, running into my house.

“That way!” I point, and she nods. She stops to hand me the baby, and he looks at me with the same confused expression I must have on.

“What is going on?” I hold him out like he’s stinky because, being realistic, this might be the first time I’ve ever held a baby. I have no clue what the hell I am doing, and I don’t want to drop him. I walk into the living room and sit down, waiting for Reagan to be done so she can explain what she’s doing here.

“Hey! Thank you.” She scoops up baby Emmett and gives him a little kiss on his head and then sits across from me.

“Did you stop by just to use my bathroom? Because you’re welcome any time, but I was sleeping.”

“I know, I tried calling but you didn’t answer.” She frowns.

“So you decided to risk it and wake me up instead?” My eyes widen.

“Well, yes. But also, there’s a delicate conversation that I need to have with you but you’re always working, and I didn’t want to have this conversation at the shop.”

“Are you firing me? Because I think that’s illegal to do that in someone’s house,” I point out.

“What? No! Shush.” She waves me off with her tattooed hand. She has more tattoos than I do at this point, although it’s been a good year since she’s gotten any new ones.

“Then what?” I prompt.

“I’m looking to take back some time at the shop so I can be there for my kids more. With that, I’d like to ask if you’d like to take on some more hours and responsibilities.”

“Oh,” I say because I don’t know what to say. Do I want to work more and take on more at the shop? I’m pretty satisfied with what I’m doing already. Do I want to make my job more complicated than it already is?

“I’m looking to make you a partner of Rainy Day Tattoos. You’re talented and smart, and I trust you. It would require you to be the manager when I’m not around, but other than that, it’s your normal responsibilities.
